Bosniaks in the Republic of Srpska (RS) last night opposed the adoption of the RS’s new coat of arms. Chairman of the Bosnia-Hercegovina tripartite presidency Haris Silajdzic lent his support to the Bosniak MP club in the RS assembly, stating that he would take the matter to the Bosnian Constitutional Court if the RS Constitutional Court failed to address the matter, since, according to Silajdzic, the RS was simply “recycling the coat of arms of neighboring Serbia”. Bosniaks oppose RS coat of arms The Bosniaks claim that the new coat of arms resembles the old one that the Bosnian Constitutional Court rejected, as it displayed the symbols of only one of the RS’s three constitutive peoples—the Serbs. Silajdzic claims that the new coat of arms runs counter to the judgment of the Bosnian courts in March 2006, which ruled that it was unacceptable and irrational for any one of the constitutive people to have a privileged position in upholding tradition, culture, and identity. The ruling parties in the RS, the SNSD and the PDP, last night adopted a new hymn, “My Republic” written by Mladen Matovic, while the coat of arms depicts a red shield inside of which is a two-headed eagle in flight with a golden crown on either side of its tail. The eagle carries a red shield on its breast, on which there is a silver cross between four flints, while the shield is held on either side by two lions, the one on the right wearing a closed golden crown, and the one on the left an open golden crown adorned with three lilies. Silajdzic, however, says that “even if it is accepted that the shield with the crown with the lilies upholds the traditions of the Bosniak and Croat peoples, these symbols are clearly in an inferior position to the symbols of the Serb people, which dominate the new coat of arms.”
