The Minister of Education Slavica Djukić Dejanović sent a letter to the principals of primary and secondary schools in which she called on all employees in education to do everything to start classes regularly. As announced by state officials, most schools will work at full capacity, while a number of them announce the suspension of work.In the middle of the month, four representative unions made a decision to accept the Serbian Government's offer to increase wages and continue negotiations on a collective agreement, and also decided to put a moratorium on strike activities. On January 15, the Government of Serbia adopted an amended regulation which increases the basic coefficients for salaries of employees in education, starting with the salary for March in the amount of five percent, as well as the salary for October, also in the amount of five percent. At the same session, the Government also adopted a Conclusion on the adoption of the Annex to the Special Collective Agreement for Higher Education.Despite all this, the suspension of classes was announced in a smaller number of schools. In her letter, Djukić Dejanović reminded that after successful negotiations between the Government and representative trade unions in education, an agreement was reached on the fulfillment of key requirements, which enabled all the conditions for the regular continuation of the school year. She stated that we are witnessing huge pressures on teachers, but also on parents, exerted by formal and informal groups with the aim of achieving political goals and pointed out that the announced illegal refusal of some teachers to hold classes has no justification whatsoever. She also pointed out that the Law prohibits party organization and activity in educational institutions and the use of the premises of the institution for those purposes.Djukić Dejanović reminded that principals are responsible for the legality of their work and added that the Ministry of Education and the Government will provide assistance to principals and teachers in fulfilling their legal obligations in all capacities. She also pointed out that if there is an arbitrary and illegal suspension of classes by some teachers, the key question is how the children will make up for the missed lessons.President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said on Saturday evening that on Monday, 82 percent of schools will have regular classes.Vučić stated that, according to the data he has, 1,773 schools will have regular classes, in 199 schools, individual teachers will not work, but the schools will work, and in 94 schools, which is slightly less than 5 percent, they will try to create a complete suspension of work, which is, as he pointed out, absolutely against the law.Prime Minister Miloš Vučević also stated on Sunday that it is expected that 82 percent of schools will work at full capacity and added that the impression is being deliberately created that schools are not starting to work, because, as he stated, there are media pressure groups and social networks on which incorrect information is published without any responsibility. He stressed that schools must work, and those who don't will be faced with the educational inspection, which will come and do its job.The Prime Minister said earlier that the deadline for the conclusion of grades from the first semester, which was completed earlier by the government's decision, was extended until January 24 or 25.President of the Provincial Government, Maja Gojković, said today that, according to the latest information she has, it is expected that around 85 percent of schools in the territory of AP Vojvodina will be open tomorrow. The first semester ended with the decision of the Government of Serbia in all schools on December 23, instead of December 27, as planned in the school calendar.Djukić Dejanović stated at the time that the decision was made because it was estimated that due to blockades and strikes, the quality of work was not adequate.
