Trudeau is considering that option, sources told Canadian television, as his finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigned today after clashing with Trudeau over US tariffs, dealing a huge blow to an already unpopular government.Freeland resigned today, explaining that she no longer shares the same view as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the best path forward for the country. The resignation of Freeland (56), who was also deputy prime minister, is one of the biggest crises Trudeau has faced since taking power in November 2015.In a letter to the prime minister, she stated that she was honored to serve in the government, "for the benefit of Canada and Canadians," Reuters reported."We have achieved a lot together. You told me on Friday that you no longer want me to be your finance minister and you offered me another position in the government. When I thought about it better, I decided that the only way for me was to retire from the government. In order to be effective, a cabinet minister must speak for the prime minister, and you have made it clear to me that I no longer enjoy that trust," Freeland said in the letter. She added that she and Trudeau had diverged in recent weeks on the way forward for Canada."Our country is facing serious challenges today. The future administration in the US is pursuing a policy of aggressive economic nationalism, including the threat of 25 percent tariffs," Freeland said, adding that the threat must be taken very seriously.According to her, this means that the fiscal policy must be maintained in order to preserve the reserves needed for the upcoming tariff war. As Freeland added, it also means rejecting US economic nationalism with a determined effort and fight for capital and investment."At the same time, this implies that we should work in good faith with the prime ministers of the provinces and territories of our great country, and build a joint response to threats. I know that Canadians would recognize and respect such an approach," the official said.Freeland concluded that Canada will win if it is strong, smart and united. It also leaves him without a key ally and he is now on course to lose the next election to the opposition Conservatives.Trudeau has come under pressure to resign from the New Democrats, a smaller opposition party that withdrew its unconditional support for the minority Liberal government earlier this year but continued to back the prime minister on some bills through parliament.
