"The Secretary of State expressed concern about the recent arrests and protests in Turkey," the State Department said in a statement released late last night after a meeting between US and Turkish foreign ministers Marco Rubio and Hakan Fidan.This is the first official reaction of the US Secretary of State to the Turkish government's response to the protest.Washington has so far appealed for respect for human rights.Demonstrators also gathered on the streets in Turkey yesterday.More than 1,400 people have been arrested in Turkey since the start of a major uprising sparked by the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the main rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
