WASHINGTON The new chairman of the Serbian caucus in the U.S. Congress will be Ted Poe, a Republican Party congressman from Texas. He is replacing Dan Burton, since he will be retiring, Tanjug has learned. Serbian caucus in U.S. Congress has new chairman Poe will take over once the Congress begins its next session, after the U.S. presidential election in November. The famous Texan congressman, who also served as a judge and prosecutor during his career, is known for his initiatives in favor of Serbia's foreign policy. In February this year, ahead of the EU's decision on whether to grant Serbia the status of a candidate for membership, Poe and 3 other congressmen sent a letter to the administrations in Brussels and Washington in support of a positive decision. Also, during one of the Congress's foreign affairs committee's most recent discussions about Kosovo, Poe called on Washington to seriously support the investigation into human organ trafficking in Kosovo, where the suspects are members of the ethnic Albanian so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). He accepted to lead the Serbian caucus as the result of cooperation with the Serbian embassy in Washington. "We are extremely pleased that congressman Poe has agreed to be the next chairman. He is a congressman with a very good reputation in the Republican Party and will be co-chairing with Democratic Party congressman Pete Visclosky," Serbian Ambassador to Washington Vladimir Petrovic told Tanjug. Poe is known to respect Serbian history very much, as well as the fact that Serbia fought on the same side as the U.S. in both world wars. He is a member of a number of congressional committees, for Europe, Eurasia, justice, immigration, anti-terrorism, national security and others. (Beta, file) Tanjug
