An American Airlines passenger plane with 60 passengers and four crew members crashed into the Potomac River after colliding with a military helicopter while landing at the Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington.

More than 300 rescuers were sent to the accident site, but the weather conditions are bad and the search for the passengers, or their bodies, is extremely difficult, since the collision occurred in the early hours of the morning. Also, air and water temperatures are low.
Minute by minute, the details of this terrible accident are leaking, and American President Donald Trump immediately spoke out.
Rescuers and local officials said all passengers were believed to have died, making the tragedy one of the deadliest in the US.
Witness of the tragedy: I saw a white light
A 17-year-old witness to a fatal plane crash in Washington had a frighteningly close look at the tragedy.
Jimmy Mazel told CNN he was dining at Gravelly Point Park, a small public green space in Arlington, not far from Reagan National Airport.
"I noticed a white light falling from the sky and I wasn't sure what it was. I was very worried about what it could be," Mazel said.
It was too dark to see exactly what was going on, and he only learned the details when he spoke to reporters gathered in Arlington, he said.
"I'm still shocked. I'm still a little shaken," Mazel said.
Hegseth: The crew of the military helicopter was experienced
The US military helicopter that collided with a passenger plane near Washington was operated by a "fairly experienced crew" and used night vision goggles, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said today.
He added that all aircraft of the battalion to which this helicopter belonged were grounded for 48 hours, reports Reuters.
"We expect that the investigation will quickly be able to determine whether the aircraft was in the corridor and at the correct altitude at the time of the incident," Hegseth said.
One official said other helicopters, such as those from the National Guard, would still be allowed to help with recovery efforts.
The US military has spoken out
The crew of the Black Hawk helicopter that collided with a commercial airliner was "quite experienced," the US military said Thursday, the Telegraph reports.
The Pentagon has begun notifying the next of kin of three soldiers who were on a training flight when they collided with an American Airlines plane on final approach to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the flight was part of an annual proficiency check exercise. Every year, pilots and crews must undergo night evaluations.
Divers search for bodies in "extremely cold" water
Water temperatures in the Potomac River are "extremely low" which "makes it very difficult for divers to recover bodies," reports a Sky News correspondent from Washington.
"The flow of water is also quite fast, which means that the area where the wreckage fell is expanding. An urgent investigation is underway to determine what went wrong," he adds.
Official information: The bodies of 27 people from the plane and one from the helicopter were found
The mayor of Washington Muriel Bowser and other officials, speaking to the press, presented the official data on the number of bodies found - 27 people from the plane and one person from the helicopter.
Officials noted that all Americans share a "deep sense of sadness" over the "tragic events," while the fire chief confirmed that the focus is shifting from a "rescue operation" to a "search operation" because there are almost certainly no survivors.
Dawn is slowly breaking in Washington
