An American Airlines passenger plane collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter last night, American time, after which the passenger plane crashed into the Potomac River.

The plane, which took off from Wichita, was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, and according to US media reports, after a military helicopter crashed into it, it exploded and fell, splitting in half.

More than 300 people with equipment are participating in the operation to find the passengers, while their efforts are hampered by very bad weather conditions. Namely, the collision occurred in the early hours of the morning, it is dark and temperatures are low.

The river where the plane crashed has an average depth of 7.3 meters and is 652 kilometers long.

Black Hawk Flight Control: Do you see the plane? Do you see the plane?

American media report that details have emerged about the last moments before the plane and helicopter collided, that is, the communication between the pilot and the flight control.

Namely, as stated, a few minutes before the planned landing, the control tower asked the incoming passenger plane if it could land on the airport's shorter runway.

The pilots then replied that they could and the controllers directed them to Runway 33.

Also, less than 30 seconds before the crash, an air traffic controller contacted the pilot of the military helicopter and asked if he could see the plane?

The controller made another call to the helicopter moments later. However, a crash ensued.

The data transmitted by the plane's transponder before the crash show that the plane was at a height of about 120 meters at the time of the crash, moving at a speed of 225 kilometers per hour.

There are no survivors at this time

Two law enforcement sources confirmed to CNN that there are no survivors at this time.

Officials are bracing for what could be Washington's deadliest disaster in decades since an Air Florida plane crashed into the Arlington-D.C. bridge in 1982.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin says rescuers from Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland are mobilized and searching for bodies.

"Pray for the passengers, crew, their families and the brave first responders," his post on X said.
