White House: They are terrorists
US President Donald Trump has designated Yemen's Houthi rebels, formally known as the Ansar Allah movement, as a "foreign terrorist organization", according to a statement from the White House.
The decision, made by Trump on Wednesday, carries with it tougher penalties than the Joseph Biden administration had applied to the Iran-linked Islamist group, which has been attacking merchant ships in the Red Sea as well as US warships defending the waterway, because of what they say are Israeli aggressions on Gaza, reports Reuters.
"Houth activities threaten the security of American civilians and personnel in the Middle East, the security of our closest regional partners, and the stability of global maritime trade," the White House said in a statement.
The Houthis are an armed group from Yemen from among the local Shia Muslim minority - the Zaidi.
The group was formed in the 1990s to fight what they said was the corruption of then-President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
They were named after Hussein Al Houthi, the founder of the movement.
They also call themselves Ansar Allah, or God's helpers.
