The Bundestag is dissolved
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved the Bundestag today and announced early parliamentary elections for February 23, 2025.
"Difficult times" require a functioning government, Steinmeier said in explaining his decision.
"That is why I am convinced that new elections are the right way for the well-being of our country," said Steinmeier, according to German media.
The political parties in Germany have already agreed on the election date to be February 23, but this required the dissolution of the Bundestag, in accordance with Article 68 of the German Constitution.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz asked the Bundestag for a confidence vote last Monday and lost the vote after the ruling coalition collapsed.
He then suggested to the Federal President that the Bundestag be dissolved and thus open the door for new elections, and according to the Constitution, the Federal President can do this within 21 days, but is not obliged to do so.
