"Sending NATO troops is a terrifying risk"
"The statement of NATO member countries about the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine brings the danger of the Third World War closer," Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in an interview with TASS.
His words reflect the Kremlin's rhetoric that the presence of NATO troops will escalate the situation and lead to a direct conflict between NATO and Russia, writes the Ukrainian portal Pravda.
This year, after heavy fighting and apparently heavy losses, the Russians captured the war-torn town of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine and captured other villages further west.
"If there is talk about the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine on behalf of some NATO member states, it is really dangerous, because we do not want to face the threat. The terrifying risk of the outbreak of the Third World War is approaching," he said.
"But at the same time, while arms deliveries from the West continue, Russia cannot win a big victory either," Szijjártó added.
According to him, that is why Budapest insists on starting peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
French President Emmanuel Macron caused a stir last month by saying Western allies should not rule out sending troops to Ukraine. Several countries, including the Czech Republic, have said they will not send troops to Ukraine.
Other countries, especially from the eastern wing of NATO, on the contrary, supported the leader of the Elysée Palace.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said, among other things, that NATO countries would risk a nuclear conflict by sending their soldiers to Ukraine.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who maintains close economic relations with Russia, has already stated in the past that the war can only be ended through negotiations. He did not say how peace negotiations would be possible in the current situation.
Hungary, which is a member of the European Union and NATO, refuses to provide military support to Ukraine and has long criticized the sanctions imposed on Russia for aggression against the neighboring country.
