Namely, in a statement published on the page of the presidential office on social networks, he stated that he was in Syria until the morning of December 8.

Assad stated that in the days when the opposition forces advanced from the north of Syria towards Damascus, he did not intend to resign and did not think about seeking asylum.

He explained that he first went from Damascus to the Russian Hmeimim base near the coastal city of Latakia, where he learned that the rebels had captured Damascus, reports the Russian news agency Riya Novosti (RIA Novosti).

He added that his evacuation to Russia was preceded by the collapse of the army and the paralysis of state institutions.

"I did not plan to leave my homeland, as they try to present it. And I did not leave it in the last hours of the battles. I remained in Damascus, fulfilling my duties until the morning of December 8," the statement said.

Some time before Assad's announcement, some Western media also announced that the Syrian president had transferred huge amounts of money to Russian banks months before he was ousted from power, as well as that he had bought a luxury property in Moscow.
