D-Day: Today, the German parliament votes on a vote of no confidence
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will today call on the German Parliament to vote no confidence in the German government, which will be the first formal step that will enable early elections to be held after the collapse of the ruling coalition.
If the parliament passes the no confidence vote, it expects him to resign to allow the procedure for elections, Reuters reported.
After that, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier should dissolve the parliament. The Free Democrats left the ruling coalition last month, and Scholz's Social Democrats and the Greens now govern without a parliamentary majority.
Early parliamentary elections in Germany are scheduled for February 23, and Scholz and government ministers will remain in their posts in an acting capacity until a new government is formed, which could take months if there are protracted negotiations on the formation of a ruling coalition after the parliamentary elections.
