Chaos in South Korea: Invasion and arrest of the president being prepared?
South Korean police are considering issuing an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol and raiding the presidential residence as part of an investigation into sedition charges against him, following a failed attempt to impose a state of emergency.
An official of the special investigation team of the National Investigation Office announced that Yoon is a suspect in investigations by the police, prosecutor's office and the anti-corruption body for his sudden declaration of a state of emergency on December 3, which he soon withdrew under pressure, reports Yonhap.
When asked about the possibility of issuing an arrest warrant for Yoon, the official told reporters that it was being considered internally.
He also announced that he was seeking the ability to search Yoon's residence, and to issue a warrant to seize his communications records or the president to appear for questioning.
Police officials tried to enter the South Korean president's office on Wednesday to search for material related to the state of emergency decree, but the security service refused to cooperate and police were provided with limited documents.
In a public address on Thursday, Yoon said he would not resign, that his political opponents were "anti-state forces", defending the short-term martial law he imposed in the country as a legal move to protect democracy.
"I will fight to the end," Yoon said in a speech broadcast on state television.
