The cause of this global heat is the long-term trend of climate change, which is the result of the emission of greenhouse gases, mainly from fossil fuels.

Meteorologist Adam Scaife explained that El Niño temporarily increased global temperatures, but that climate change continues to make each year warmer.

Scientists are also investigating other factors that could be contributing to rising temperatures, such as volcanic eruptions.
