Total collapse: the Russians demanded an urgent session of the UN Security Council

The consultations, which were requested by Russia on Sunday, will be held starting at 3:00 p.m. local time, the Paris daily specified, citing several diplomatic sources who told AFP.

Yesterday, Russia requested urgent consultations of the United Nations Security Council on Syria, a UN source told Russian media. The source said yesterday that Russia requested consultations regarding the latest events in Syria and their consequences for the UN mission in that country - UNDOF - whose role is to separate Syrian and Israeli troops on the Golan Heights.

The consultations should be attended by the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Rosemary DiCarlo, and the Deputy Secretary General of the World Organization for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, RIA Novosti reported.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, said on Sunday for the Russian Agency that Russia is closely monitoring the situation in Syria and will review it in the coming days, stressing that "what is happening in Syria raises many questions for everyone".

The Syrian opposition forces announced yesterday that they had captured the capital city of Damascus and expressed their readiness to cooperate with the international community to stabilize the situation in the country.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously announced that Bashar al-Assad resigned as president of Syria, left the country and issued instructions for a peaceful transfer of power after negotiations, in which, as the Russian Ministry further claims, Russia did not participate.
