Reuters reports that the gang leader, known as Monel "Mikano" Felix, along with his Viv Ansanm group, were responsible of the massacre.

The National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (RNDDH) said that after Felix's child became sick, the gang leader sought advice from a voodoo priest who accused the elderly people in the area of harming the child through witchcraft, triggering Felix to order the massacre.

Gang members killed at least 60 people on Friday and 50 on Saturday using machetes and knives on the victims, all of them aged over 60, according to the RNDDH report.

Cite Soleil, a densely populated harborside slum in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, is among the poorest and most dangerous areas of Haiti.

Strict control imposed by the gangs, including restricted use of mobile phones, reduced the ability of residents to share information about the massacre.
