Russia confirmed: Bashar al-Assad resigned and fled
After negotiations with several parties involved in the Syrian conflict, Bashar al-Assad resigned as president and left Syria, giving instructions for a peaceful handover of power, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday.
"Russia was not involved in those negotiations," the ministry said.
The ministry added that Russian military bases in Syria are on high alert, although there is currently no significant security threat to them.
"Moscow is in contact with all groups of the Syrian opposition," announced the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Earlier, the Deputy President of the Council of the Federation of Russia, Konstantin Kosachev, addressed the situation in Syria, stating that the citizens of Syria will have to deal with the civil war in their country by themselves.
He also emphasized that Russia provides support to Syria, but that the resolution of internal conflicts in the country is still the responsibility of the people of that country, and that the Russians will not interfere.
