The meeting was called after the request for the impeachment of the South Korean president submitted by the opposition parties, Yonhap news agency reports.

Han Duck-soo, PPP leader Han Dong-hoon and PPP leader Choo Kyung-ho arrived at the presidential office after their earlier meeting with presidential chief of staff Suk Yin Chung to discuss the follow-up to yesterday's brief declaration of martial law.

The latest move comes hours after opposition parties tabled a motion to impeach South Korea's president following his declaration of martial law, which lawmakers blocked later in the day.

The Democratic Party and five other smaller parties plan to present the proposal, which has been submitted to the parliamentary procedure, at the plenary session of the parliament on Thursday, with the request that it be put to a vote on Friday or Saturday.

A two-thirds majority in the parliament is required for the adoption of the proposal to impeach the president, that is, out of 300 MPs in the National Assembly, the opposition MPs should also be joined by eight MPs of the ruling party.
