Dad of the year? Biden made a shocking decision
US President Joseph Biden has announced that he has pardoned his son Hunter Biden in court proceedings against him for tax violations and in connection with the carrying of firearms.
He justified his decision by claiming that his son was unfairly prosecuted.
Biden said he signed the pardon for his son Hunter on Sunday, although since taking office he has said he will not interfere in decisions made by the courts and the Justice Department.
He stated that he has stuck to that decision until now, although, as he stated, he watched his son being "unfairly prosecuted", Reuters reported.
The pardon states that Biden granted a "full and unconditional" pardon for Hunter Biden for any offenses between January 1, 2014 and December 1 of this year.
Biden assessed that Hunter was prosecuted only because he is his son. Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to tax violations and was convicted of firearms charges after he made a false declaration that he was drug-free when obtaining a gun permit.
He pleaded guilty to evading $1.4 million in taxes in September, and sentencing in that case was scheduled for December 16.
White House has repeatedly announced that Biden will not pardon or reduce the sentences for his son Hunter. Republicans criticized Biden's decision to pardon his son.
The newly elected US president, Donald Trump, said that by pardoning Hunter, Biden abused his position and powers, and thus prevented justice from being served.
Trump asked on his social network Truth Social why those convicted of the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 were not pardoned because they did not recognize the results of the presidential election, according to which Biden won.
