The White House confirmed: Biden will fulfill his promise
Outgoing US President Joseph Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump in January, White House spokesman Andrew Bates said.
"The president has promised to attend the inauguration of whoever wins the election," Bates said, according to Reuters.
He stated that Joseph and Jill Biden will fulfill that promise and attend the inauguration. Trump and Biden met on November 13 at the White House, after the outgoing US president said he would allow a smooth transition of power.
The traditional meeting between the outgoing and the newly elected president was not held after the 2020 election, when Trump made claims after his defeat that the election was stolen in favor of Biden and the Democrats.
He then left Washington and did not attend Biden's inauguration. He thus became the first president to do so since Andrew Jackson, who avoided Ulysses Grant's inauguration in 1869.
Eight years ago, after winning the 2016 election, Trump had a ninety-minute meeting in the Oval Office with then-outgoing President Barack Obama.
Officially, the process of political transitions in the USA do not involve meetings between the outgoing and newly elected presidents, and an informal practice was established when in 1841 the outgoing president Martin Van Buren hosted the newly elected William Henry Harrison for dinner at the White House.
Trump will formally take office on January 20, 2025 after the inauguration ceremony.
