At least one person was killed and several others were injured after a plane crashed early this morning near the airport in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
"Two people were hospitalized, and one was pronounced dead. These are the people who, according to preliminary data, were on the plane," Saulius Raševskis, a representative of the Fire Protection and Rescue Sector (PAGD), told LRT radio.
Police representative Ramunas Matonis confirmed to LRT that four people were on the plane, and one of the two pilots was killed. Officials do not yet have information on casualties in the vicinity of the building where the plane crashed.
Vilnius district police spokeswoman Julia Samorokovska noted that traffic in the area is limited due to the incident. The general director of "DHL Lietuva" Mindaugas Pivoriunas told the Lithuanian public service that the plane belonged to the company that was engaged under the contract.
"For now, the cause of the accident is not yet clear, nor is it known what the plane was transporting. We have no details, because it is not our plane, it is our contractor, they are the owners and operators of the plane and have basic information," he said.
The representative of Lithuanian airports Tadas Vasiliauskas says that the incident happened near Vilnius airport.
"The airport in Vilnius is not closed, but the planes are standing on the platform, waiting for permission to take off. Of course, rescue operations are underway, the incident is being localized. We are waiting for news from the city's special services," Vasiliauskas said.
Airport representative Marius Zelenius previously told LRT radio that a large number of members of the Fire and Rescue Service (PAGD) were deployed on the scene.
PAGD stated that they received information at around 05:28 that a cargo plane flying from Leipzig crashed into a residential building. One pilot was released from the aircraft after regaining consciousness.
"The two-story residential building is burning with open flames," a representative of the Fire Department told LRT radio.
