Complete blockade; Emergency evacuation, radioactive waste found
Waste believed to be radioactive was found in bin bags near a primary school in Hammersmith, London, prompting the evacuation of at least twelve households.
Radioactive waste was discovered by a City Sanitary worker, writes the Daily Mail.
A specialist unit blocked the street and evacuated residents from nearby homes warning them not to enter the street until the situation calmed down, and one neighbor said he could not return home after work because the street was blocked.
One of the employees of City Waste Management, who introduced himself as George, said that he believed that a 90-year-old woman who passed away lived in the home in front of which the waste was found, while the male resident was placed in a home for the elderly.
George added that every room in the house was cluttered with things that hadn't been thrown away in years.
"I took one round of garbage to the landfill, and when they scanned it, they told me that I couldn't leave the things because they were radioactive. I didn't even know what was in them, there was so much garbage. I didn't know what to do", George said.
One of the police officers who arrived at the scene said that the item was checked and found to be safe.
