Painful blow: German "no" to Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said today that Germany will not send long-range "Taurus" cruise missiles to Ukraine because, as he stated, that would mean Germany's direct involvement in the war.
In this way, Scholz responded to a journalist's question to comment on media reports that the US had approved the delivery of long-range missiles to Ukraine for attacks deep inside Russian territory.
The German chancellor indicated that the use of German "Taurus" missiles in the war between Ukraine and Russia would mean that Germany accepts joint responsibility for target control, which would de facto make it a party to the war.
"That's something I can't and don't want to do," said Scholz, pointing out that Germany has so far forbidden Ukraine to use the German weapons that have been delivered to it to target targets deep in Russian territory.
The world media, including Reuters and the "New York Times", reported on Sunday that the administration of outgoing US President Joseph Biden authorized Ukraine to use ATACMS long-range cruise missiles for strikes deep in Russian territory.
In the meantime, this information was confirmed tonight by the EU's high representative for foreign policy and security, Josep Borrell, while there is still no official confirmation from Washington.
