Disturbing data: The evidence is irrefutable, it's too late
The latest information from experts shocked the world. Namely, for the first time irrefutable evidence has appeared that warm sea water penetrates under the colossal Thwaites Glacier.
That glacier is the size of Florida and contains enough water to raise the level of the world's oceans by 65 centimeters.
Already, as Jutarnji list reports, numerous atolls of the island nation of Kiribati, which rises no more than two meters above the Pacific Ocean, have disappeared under the waves and scientists predict that the area could be uninhabited in the next few decades, displacing hundreds of thousands of people, writes the British Telegraph in a disturbing article.
But, as it is added, it is a picture all over the world, from Venice, the Netherlands, the Maldives and London, and the world has been gradually facing that picture for years.
"It is worrying that we are underestimating the rate at which the glacier is changing, which is devastating to coastal communities around the world," said Dr Christine Dow, a professor in the School of the Environment at the University of Waterloo and co-author of the study.
Thwaites is, as she said, the most unstable place in Antarctica.
Coastal cities are threatened with disaster
As climate change raises global temperatures higher and higher, glaciers and ice sheets in mountain regions and polar ice caps are melting.
Eroding ice flows straight into the world's oceans, raising sea levels.
Any sudden increase could be disastrous for coastal cities, such as London, New York and Shanghai, write the British.
Thwaites, which measures about 120 kilometers wide and 1.2 kilometers deep, has been slowly melting for decades. But now a team of international researchers has discovered evidence of "enhanced melting".
