Very heavy rains flooded roads and entire towns. The torrents carried away cars, derailed trains, and an unknown number of buildings and houses were destroyed.

Authorities in the worst-hit areas advised people to stay at home and avoid all non-essential travel.

Emergency services say at least 51 people have died in floods that have hit southeastern Spain. Children were also among the victims in the Valencia region.

In Letur, near the Sierra de Segura, 30 people were trapped after the river that runs through the town burst its banks.

Videos circulating show people trying to save themselves from the floods by climbing trees.

Authorities used helicopters to rescue residents from their homes.

Other videos shared by Spanish broadcasters show water seeping into houses as cars are carried down the street.

Radio and TV stations received hundreds of calls for help from people trapped in flooded areas or searching for loved ones, as emergency services could not reach all affected locations.

Rescuers pull babies out of floods

Rescuers are pulling out the dead babies from the floods that engulfed the European country.

So far, the bodies of at least two babies have been recovered, and the death toll in the unprecedented floods has exceeded 50.

According to local media, in the town of Paiporta, rescuers recovered the bodies of four people, two men, a woman and a baby.

In the city of Torrent, rescuers found five lifeless bodies, including a baby.

Valencia was the hardest hit, where several people are still missing. Tourists who came to tour Valencia say they were trapped in the vehicle for almost 10 hours.

Vitaly Farafonov and his wife were visiting Valencia when the police pulled them off the highway around 8 p.m. last night.

"It was chaotic"

"It was chaos. We counted nine or 10 overturned trucks on a stretch of highway in less than a kilometer. We've never seen anything like this," said Farafonov.

The couple, who live in Luxembourg, have four children who are safe in Barcelona with relatives. Farafonov said that he and his wife were stuck on a country road.

The Government of Castilla-La Mancha requested the activation of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) due to the consequences of the rain in the province of Cuenca.

Moreover, early this morning, the Specific Plan for the Risk of Harmful Meteorological Phenomena was activated. The Department of Civil Protection has issued a new warning to the population of Valencia to avoid road traffic.
