The order was issued: Prepare for war
Iran is preparing for war with Israel, which has announced retaliation for the Iranian missile attack, but is also trying to avoid the spread of the conflict, writes the New York Times, citing Iranian officials.
"Iran has ordered the armed forces to be ready for war, but also to try to avoid it," the newspaper said, citing four Iranian officials who said Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had ordered the Iranian armed forces to make more plans in response to the expected Israeli retaliation.
Iranian officials have warned that Iran will launch an attack on Israel if the Israeli army responds with casualties or significant damage.
The officials, two of whom belong to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, said Iran would definitely respond if Israel struck Iran's oil sites, nuclear facilities or targeted senior officials.
As options for responding to such an attack by Israel, officials list an attack on Israel with up to 1,000 ballistic missiles or the interruption of energy supply to the region, reports the newspaper.
On October 1, Iran launched more than 180 rockets at Israel, saying it was revenge for the killings of the leaders of the militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as aggression in Gaza and Lebanon.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that Iran would pay for the attack.
