Members of the UN are hiding in shelters: We are threatened
The head of the United Nations peacekeeping missions, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, stated before the UN Security Council that the safety of more than 10,400 members of the peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is "increasingly threatened".
He also said that operations have practically stopped since the end of September, which coincided with the escalation of Israel's attacks on the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
"The members of the peacekeeping mission were confined to their bases and spent significant periods of time in shelters," Lacroix said, adding that UNIFIL was ready to support all efforts to reach a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
UNIFIL announced that Israeli forces deliberately fired at the positions of the UN peacekeeping mission, when two members of the peacekeeping forces from Indonesia were injured.
UNIFIL characterized the attacks on its peacekeepers as a "serious violation of international humanitarian law".
The White House said the US was deeply concerned about the attack on UN peacekeepers and was pressuring Israel to provide details about the attack.
The Israeli army said its troops were operating in the Nakura area, next to the UNIFIL base.
"Accordingly, the IDF instructed the UN forces in the area to remain in protected areas, after which the forces opened fire in the area," Israel said in a statement, noting that it maintains routine communication with UNIFIL.
"The peacekeepers are determined to remain in their positions, despite Israeli attacks and orders from the Israeli army to leave them," UN force spokesman Andrea Tenenti said.
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said Israel recommended that UNIFIL move five kilometers north to avoid the danger of intensified fighting.
