Unprecedented rainfall in the past two decades in Central Europe also affected parts of Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania and Austria.

At least 21 people lost their lives, including another firefighter who died on duty in the southern Italian province of Foggia. He was a member of the team that helped motorcyclists stuck in the storm on the highway between San Severo and Torremaggiore.

The authorities in Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland warn of floods in the coming days. The peak of the water wave is expected in the Hungarian city of Győr tonight, then on Friday, in Vac, and on Saturday afternoon in Budapest.

In the cities on the Danube, Baja and Mohács, emergency protection measures of the first and second degree are implemented. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's decree on flood protection, which mandates coordinated protection measures for the entire territory of the country, affected by the peak of the flood wave, entered into force.

Orbán said that the most difficult phase of protection is underway, which is expected to last until next Thursday.

"This is the most difficult period. It will take about a week or eight days starting today - he said. 4,392 people have been evacuated, and the most threatened areas are Pilismarót, some parts of highway 11 in the northwest of the country and Margaret Island, as well as the Batthyány Square metro station in Budapest, where water resources management experts are working to divert the flow of water. I hope that subway station doesn't have to be closed. The army, the Ministry of Interior and volunteers are working to protect vulnerable areas in the western parts of the country," said Orbán.

Orbán's decree stipulates that activities in the field of defense are coordinated by the minister responsible for defense against disasters, that is, internal affairs, Sándor Pintér, the Hungarian portal Index reports.

Warnings for heavy rain, winds and flooding have been issued for most of Italy, the BBC reports.

Reports are pouring in of flooding in Pescara in central Italy, while the Federal Meteorological Service warns that the storm will hit the northern coast of the Emilia-Romagna region.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at the meeting of the Crisis Staff in Wroclaw that it is important to send information to the competent services as soon as possible from the places where the flood wave will reach. He stated that the cities south of Wroclaw are already flooded.

More than 5,000 troops have been deployed to help people in southern Poland, including 40,000 residents evacuated from the city of Nysa.

In the area from Romania to Poland, floods brought mud and debris to cities, destroying bridges, submerging cars and causing great material damage to households, which is estimated at several billion dollars.
