The White House announced after the incident that US President Joseph Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were informed of the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump played golf.

"They were relieved to learn that he was safe. Their team will keep them updated on the situation," the White House said.

The Secret Service has taken former president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to safety after agents opened fire on a man who was spotted with what may have been a gun while the former president was on the golf course, law enforcement sources said, the New York Post reported.

The shooting comes about two months after Thomas Matthew Crooks' failed assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, injuring his ear.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw said today that the man who pointed a rifle through the fence of Trump's golf course had a scope, backpacks and a GoPro camera, AP reports.

Bradshaw said a Secret Service agent was able to spot a rifle barrel with a scope sticking out of the fence at Trump's West Palm Beach golf club, CNN reported.

The suspect was 300 to 500 meters away from former President Donald Trump, the official said.

According to Bradshaw, a Secret Service agent noticed a rifle sticking out of the fence and opened fire. The agent fired four to six rounds, a Secret Service official said. The suspect then fled, but was caught a short time later.

Bradshaw said the suspect's belongings are being processed. An eyewitness saw the suspect running from the bushes and took a picture of his vehicle which led to the arrest of the suspect.

The man taken into custody after the shooting near Trump was "relatively calm" when he was taken into custody, Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder said.

"He didn't show much emotion. He didn't ask, 'What's this about?'" Snyder said.

He said his agency "overwhelmed" Interstate 95 and shut down a large portion of the freeway before eventually safely stopping the suspect vehicle.
