Hurricane Frances slammed into the Louisiana coast as a Category 2 storm, knocking out power to more than 200,000 customers, and the storm weakened significantly on its way to Mississippi.
Morgan City Fire Chief Alvin Cockerham said the hurricane quickly flooded streets, snapped power lines and knocked down tree branches, AP reports.
No deaths have been reported so far.
The outage affected most homes and businesses in coastal areas, the closest to where the storm made landfall, as well as nearby regions, according to web portal poweroutage.us, a power monitoring site.
The National Hurricane Center urged residents to stay safe as the hurricane gradually weakened as it moved inland.
The forecast path of the storm included New Orleans, where meteorologists warned that the storm could pass by.
Three hours after landfall, the hurricane weakened significantly, from winds of 155 kilometers per hour before landfall to 28 kilometers per hour on its way to New Orleans.
The storm is forecast to weaken further during the day as it moves toward Mississippi, where there is a risk of flash flooding and tornadoes.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said it has distributed more than 100,000 sandbags to the southern part of the state, and schools remain closed.
