Hell doesn't stop: Total drama, hundreds of people stuck! PHOTO/VIDEO
At least two people have died and hundreds of people are stranded after heavy rains in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces in Thailand led to swollen rivers, landslides and flooding in villages, authorities said today.
About 9,000 households have been affected by the bad weather caused by typhoon Yagi, and rescue operations are currently being hampered by strong water currents, reports Reuters.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced that rescue teams are ready, and that rescue operations will begin when the water currents weaken.
Two people have been killed in floods and landslides that hit Chiang Mai, and hundreds of people are stranded in Chiang Rai as rescue teams cannot reach them.
The chief of Chiang Rai's Mai Sai district said they would be evacuated by helicopter.
The Vietnamese authorities announced today that 143 people were killed in the onslaught of typhoon Yagi, and 58 went missing.
Yagi is the strongest tropical storm in Asia this year with recorded maximum winds of 245 kilometers per hour.
At least 16 people died in the Philippines and two in China due to the typhoon.
