143 people were killed when typhoon Yagi hit Vietnam, and 58 are missing, local authorities announced today.
Heavy rains caused great destruction in several regions in Vietnam, destroying houses and damaging infrastructure, VNA reports.
Authorities launched a campaign to collect donations for those affected on Tuesday, and almost $17 million has been raised since the initiative was launched and counting.
The Vietnamese government has allocated 200 tons of rice from the national reserve and additional funds to the 14 affected provinces to help the local population while it works to repair damage, conduct search and rescue operations and restore basic services.
Yagi is the strongest tropical storm in Asia this year with recorded maximum winds of 245 kilometers per hour. At least 16 people died in the Philippines and two in China due to the typhoon.
