NATO: No!
NATO does not want to be directly involved in the conflict with Moscow, said the spokesman of this military alliance, responding to Ukraine's demands that its Western supporters shoot down Russian missiles.
"NATO is not a party to the conflict and will not become a party to it," the bloc's spokesman told Spain's Europa Press news agency, adding that it was the bloc's responsibility to "prevent escalation".
Although each member of the bloc has the right to protect its own airspace, it should "closely consult" with others when it "may affect NATO as a whole," the spokesman said, as reported by Russian media.
The alliance announced itself through its representative after Polish Minister Radosław Sikorski supported the idea of shooting down Russian missiles in Ukrainian skies in an interview with the "Financial Times".
"When enemy missiles are on their way to enter our airspace, that would be legitimate self-defense, because when they enter our airspace, there is a significant risk that debris could injure someone," Sikorski told the FT, adding that NATO membership is not more important than the responsibility of each country to protect its airspace.
Warsaw and Kyiv signed a defense pact in July that called for talks "to examine the rationale and feasibility of possible interception" of Russian missiles and drones, but Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz says that will never happen without NATO approval.
Mircea Geoană, NATO's outgoing Deputy Secretary General, told the FT that the bloc respects "the sovereign right of each member to ensure national security" but that they "always consult before doing something that could have consequences for all of us."
Poland has always been "impeccable" when it comes to such consultations, Geoană added. According to Geoană, NATO must "do everything in our power to help Ukraine and to avoid escalation."
