Germany in big trouble?
The leader of the Christian Democrats (CDU), the leading opposition party, insisted that a significant reduction in migration to Germany be negotiated at a meeting with representatives of the government and provinces on Tuesday.
The real problem is not the gun law or deportations, Friedrich Merz said Monday in Berlin after an internal meeting of the Christian Democrats.
"The real problem is still uncontrolled migration pressure. In five deportations, 100 new migrants arrived'', he pointed out, adding that "the problem cannot be solved that way".
"If the (ruling) coalition wants to talk about a solution with us, then limiting migration must be the first item on the agenda''.
Irregular migrants, according to Merz, must return only from the German state borders. If the coalition is not ready for that, further sessions are not necessary, the leader of the Christian Democrats pointed out.
"Then, we no longer need chairs in a circle and therapeutic conversations." Then, he added, the government must bear responsibility for the consequences that may follow.
Last week, the German government adopted a package of measures against Islamist extremism, irregular migration and gun control after the recent terrorist attack in Sollingen.
The package includes a ban on carrying knives in public places, and certain groups of asylum seekers will be left without social assistance.
An attacker, allegedly linked to the terrorist Islamic State, killed three and wounded eight people with a knife in Solingen.
After the attack, Chancellor Olaf Scholz formed a working group consisting of representatives of the government, provincial authorities and the CDU.
The Christian Democrats can come to power again next year, after the September elections for the Bundestag.
