They are getting ready: Is a nuclear disaster imminent?
The authorities in Russia's Kursk region announced on Wednesday that, starting August 29, they will introduce additional security measures in the area of the city of Kurchatov and the Kursk nuclear power plant.
"Entrance to Kurchatov, where the power plant is located, will be temporarily restricted," regional governor Alexei Smirnov wrote on the Telegram social platform.
Ukrainian forces breached Russia's western border and entered the Kursk region on August 6 in a surprise attack that continues.
Russia says Ukrainian forces have repeatedly attacked the facility just 40 kilometers away.
Ukraine has not yet responded to the accusations. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, said after visiting the plant on Tuesday that there is a risk of a nuclear accident and that the situation is serious.
He added that the switchboard is extremely sensitive, because it does not have a protective dome.
