Vladimir Putin announced: We are ready

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced today that the country is ready to use nuclear weapons if there is a threat to Russian statehood, sovereignty or independence.

Speaking to Russian media, Putin said he hoped the US would avoid any escalation that could lead to a nuclear war, but stressed that Russia's nuclear forces are ready for it.

Putin pointed out that until now there was no need to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, according to RIA Novosti.

He also expressed confidence that Moscow will achieve its goals in Ukraine, and that he is open to talks, but that any deal would require firm guarantees from the West.
