The army is moving to the border with Russia
As of August 1, Poland is deploying a new mechanized military brigade in the east, on the border with Belarus and Russia.
With the help of that brigade, the army, together with the police and the Border Guard, will continue to secure the eastern border primarily from illegal and violent attempts by migrants to damage the fence and cross into the territory of the European Union.
"We will deploy that brigade here so that the security of the border will be permanent, so that the most modern weapons and military equipment, tanks, armored personnel carriers, combat infantry vehicles, howitzers, grenade launchers will be collected there. So that the inhabitants of the Podlaskie Voivodeship will feel that they are permanently safe," said Polish Minister of Defense Władysław Kośniak-Kamiś at the base near Białystok in eastern Poland.
On August 1, a new military operation called "Safe Podlasie" (Bezpieczne Podlasie) will begin on the border, in which 17,000 soldiers of the 18th Mechanized Division will participate, with 8,000 soldiers serving on the border itself, and 9,000 representing a strategic reserve.
"Unfortunately, attacks on the Polish state are being carried out today in all areas, in all areas. The new mission begins in the face of the intensification of attacks on the border. May was the month when the border was attacked non-stop, as the statistics show," said Polish Minister of Defense.
The Polish border guard announced today that in the last 24 hours, 90 attempts to cross the border between Belarus and Poland were prevented, which is three times more than in the previous days, reports Polish television Polsat.
Migrants and refugees trying to enter Poland from Belarus, according to reports from the Border Guard, are increasingly aggressive, and yesterday they threw stones at the border guards and damaged a border guard vehicle.
The most tragic incident happened on the border with Belarus on May 28, when someone from the Belarusian side wounded a 21-year-old Polish soldier through the fence with a sharp object, who died in the hospital a few days later.
Official Warsaw, but also the European Union accuse Russia and Belarus for the opening of this new eastern refugee and migrant route and mass violent attempts to cross the border from the fall of 2021, they claim that this is their method to destabilize Poland and EU.
On the border with Belarus stands a 5.5-meter-high fence erected by the previous Polish authorities from the Law and Justice party, and the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk continues to modernize it and equip it with modern sensor and camera systems, and has re-established a prohibited buffer zone on the border.
In addition to the Border Guard, soldiers and police patrol the fence, and the latest news is that special police officers trained to break up aggressive crowds, primarily football hooligans, have been transferred to the border.
