"Israel on the verge of collapse"
Deputy of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant organization, Muhammad al-Hindi, said today that the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran is an indication that Israel is on the verge of collapse.
"The murder is not only directed against the Palestinian resistance and Hamas individually, but also against Iran. Israel is on the verge of collapse, and their reactions reflect confusion and the inability to achieve any goal. Israel is facing such resistance for the first time in its history", Al-Hindi told the Lebanese Al Mayadeen television station, Al Jazeera reported.
Islamic Jihad is an ally of Hamas and was also involved in an attack in southern Israel on October 7 that killed around 1,200 people and kidnapped more than 240.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced this morning that Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed in Tehran, where the Hamas leader attended the inauguration of Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian.
Al Jazeera: Four Hamas leaders killed since 1996
Israel has killed four Hamas leaders since July 1996, including Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, with whom political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran, worked closely after joining the Palestinian group.
In January 1996, Israel killed Hamas military leader Yahya Ayash in Beit Lahiya, Gaza, reports Al Jazeera.
In March and April 2004, the spiritual leader and founder of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, and Yassin's successor and co-founder of Hamas, Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi, were killed in Gaza.
Senior Hamas official Saleh al-Aruri was killed in an Israeli drone strike in Beirut in January this year. Hamas claims that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran, while Israel has not commented, which is often the case when it comes to assassinations carried out by Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, according to the AP.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced this morning that Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed in Tehran, where the Hamas leader attended the inauguration of Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian.
Hamas called the killing in the alleged airstrike a "serious escalation" and threatened a "war for the liberation of Jerusalem."
