The FBI released new information: The assassin acted alone
The gunman who shot former US President and Republican Party candidate in the upcoming US presidential election Donald Trump on Saturday night acted alone and used a legally purchased rifle bought by the suspect's father.
"It is an AR 556 semi-automatic rifle. The FBI did not find any indications that the suspect had any mental illness. The attack is viewed as both a domestic terrorist act and an attempted murder," the US agency said, citing Reuters.
It added that there was no indication that the gunman shot at Trump for ideological reasons, and that the FBI was reviewing social media accounts, scrapped weapons and DNA samples as evidence.
"Threats and calls for violence are already on the rise on the Internet, especially after this event," the FBI announced.
Trump was injured in a shooting Saturday night during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, and at least one rally-goer were shot dead, and two other people attending the rally were seriously injured.
