Spanish Prime Minister accused the West of hypocrisy; Macron responded: It's completely unfounded
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, speaking at the NATO summit in Washington, said that Western countries have double standards when it comes to the issue of the Gaza Strip, while Macron responded sharply to those accusations.
Specifically, Sánchez reiterated that Western countries "cannot and must not allow anyone to accuse us of having double standards in defense of international law."
"In this context, what Spain has done is to demand from Ukraine, as well as from Gaza, the same way and the same firmness in respecting international law," he said.
Sánchez said on Wednesday that Western countries were guilty of "double standards" in their staunch defense of international law when it came to Russia's war against Ukraine, but not for the Palestinians when it came to Israel's war in Gaza, and called for "consistent political position".
On the other hand, Emmanuel Macron responded to Sánchez's statements, and the French president said that the West must "strongly respond" to accusations of "double standards" when it comes to Israel's war in Gaza, reports Al Jazeera.
"We are sometimes criticized for being far less concerned about Gaza than about Ukraine, and this criticism is deeply damaging to all of us," Macron told reporters at the NATO summit in Washington.
"We must show that it is unfounded claim. I repeat here that it is urgent to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, release the hostages and carry out the de-escalation that is necessary to prevent the spread of the war to Lebanon," he said.
By the way, Spain has repeatedly expressed its unwavering support for Gaza and the Palestinians.
