This portal, which moved its editorial office to the Netherlands in 2022 after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is popular among Russians living abroad, as well as among foreigners in Russia.

The Moscow Times said the labeling as an "undesirable organization" was just the "latest of many attempts" to suppress its reporting of the truth in Russia and its war in Ukraine.

The Russian Prosecutor's Office announced that "the work of that publication is aimed at discrediting the decisions of the leadership of the Russian Federation in domestic and foreign policy."

The portal was put on the list of "foreign agents" in November.

The Moscow Times was founded in 1992 and had a print edition until 2017. It moved its editorial office to the Netherlands after the adoption of a law in Russia that imposes severe penalties for publishing anything the government deems discrediting the Russian military and the invasion of Ukraine.
