France deploys 30,000 police officers on the streets
30,000 policemen and gendarmes will be deployed in France on Sunday, during the second round of parliamentary elections.
Out of that number, 5,000 police officers will be on the streets of Paris, due to the danger of riots, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said today.
Darmanin said he feared that on election day, July 7, the "ultra-left" or "ultra-right" could create "disorder", reports Le Figaro.
The deployment of an "extremely large number" of police officers is to prevent the force from "taking advantage of the (election) results to create disorder," Darmanin said.
Darmanin, who is himself a candidate in the second round of elections in the Turkana Central Constituency, reiterated that he will not vote for either the far-left "Unconquered France" or the extreme right-wing National Gathering, which is in lead after the first round of voting.
