Biden decided: More Patriots are coming
Joe Biden plans to provide Ukraine with another Patriot air defense system to defend against Russian airstrikes, the New York Times reported today, citing unnamed sources in the US government.
Biden made the decision after a series of high-level meetings last week, the paper reports.
The head of public affairs of the US National Security Council, John Kirby, has not yet confirmed this information.
According to the New York Times, the system in question is located in Poland and could be deployed to the front line in Ukraine within days.
If the information is confirmed, it would be the second American-made Patriot system that Washington has delivered to Kyiv. Biden gave the green light for the first system 18 months ago when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled to the US for the first time since the Russian invasion of Ukraine to address the US Congress.
The US also supplies Ukraine with Patriot missiles. The Patriot is considered one of the most advanced anti-aircraft missile systems in modern warfare. It can be used to combat enemy aircraft, ballistic and cruise missiles. Defense missiles can hit targets at a distance of about 100 kilometers at heights of up to 30 kilometers.
Germany also gave Ukraine two such systems and promised to send another one. Zelensky, who was in Berlin on Tuesday for a conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine, also visited Ukrainian soldiers who are currently in Germany for training in the use of Patriots.
