Germany faces a huge problem, the danger is getting bigger
The danger of Islamist terrorist attacks in Germany is significantly higher than in previous years, partly because of the war in Gaza, according to information from the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
"The risk of a jihadist attack is higher than it has been for a long time," the German Federal Office's President, Thomas Haldenwang, told dpa.
The head of the domestic intelligence service cited various factors that increase the risk of terrorist attacks, including those of radicalized individuals.
One is that the Taliban in Afghanistan generally support jihadist ideas. The burning of the Koran in Scandinavia and the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip also contributed to "starting the spiral of radicalization".
"The situation in the Middle East after the terrorist attack by Hamas is definitely another reason for the strengthening of the threat of Islamist terrorism."
Germany is more in the focus of jihadists than other European countries, "because our country, along with the USA, is considered one of the most important supporters of Israel".
He also said that it is difficult to determine what is the biggest security threat.
"Currently, we have three problematic areas - the threat of Islamist terrorism, the heated climate in society, primarily due to right-wing extremism, which includes Islamophobia and xenophobia, as well as the influence and espionage activities of foreign countries," said Haldenwang.
In addition, the threat of violent, left-wing extremism is growing.
