Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis cited record numbers of abstentions as possible reasons for such a result, reports Politico.

New Democracy maintained its lead over its opponents, but its vote share fell by 13 percent compared to last year's national elections and five percent compared to the last European elections.

As stated, it is expected that a thorough reconstruction of the cabinet will take place soon. In the EP elections, New Democracy won 28.31 percent of the vote, the opposition left-wing Syriza won four mandates with 14.92 percent of the vote, while the Socialist Party Pasok will have three mandates with 12.79 percent of the vote.

The nationalist party "Greek Solution" won two mandates with 9.3 percent of the vote, and the Communist Party KKE won two mandates with 9.25 percent of the vote. The parties Niki (4.37 percent), Put slobode (3.4 percent) and Voice of Reason (3.04 percent) each won one mandate.
