"We are still collecting data to understand the majority, but there is still a majority that supported Ursula, but the parties that are not part of this majority are also growing," Meloni told Italian radio RTL about the European Parliament (EP) election results.

She added that the election results show the citizens' demand that the EU pay more attention to the right and that Italy will play a key role in Europe.

Meloni assessed that the electoral success of Marine Le Pen in France is very important and that it points to the events in France and other European countries.

Speaking about the low turnout in the EP elections, Meloni said that citizens see the EU as distant.

"I think we need a Europe that is more able to listen to its citizens, to intrude less into their lives, but which deals with the big issues that fall under its jurisdiction," Meloni noted.

Her party "Brothers of Italy" won 28.85 percent of the votes in the EP elections, while in second place is the left-wing opposition Democratic Party with 24.04 percent, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior.
