These five countries are new members of the UN Security Council
General Assembly of the United Nations today elected Greece, Denmark, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia as new non-permanent members of the UN Security Council whose two-year mandate will begin on January 1, 2025.
The Security Council is the only UN body that can make legally binding decisions such as imposing sanctions and authorizing the use of force, and it has five permanent members with veto power - Great Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
The remaining 10 members are elected in the General Assembly, by electing five each year.
