Putin, where are you? Day D: Joseph Biden, Emmanuel Macron, Volodymyr Zelensky met... PHOTO
Veterans and world leaders gathered in France to mark the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy, when more than 150,000 Allied troops arrived in France by sea and air to defeat the forces of Nazi Germany.
American, French, Ukrainian Presidents, Joseph Biden, Emmanuel Macron, Volodymyr Zelensky, British King Charles, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and many others participate in the ceremony honoring the victims of the long battle for Normandy. Russia, as a former ally against Nazi Germany, was not invited because of the war in Ukraine.
About four thousand people attend the commemoration, among them more than 200 veterans - Americans, British, Canadians and French - the last surviving witnesses of that era, which will probably be the last major ceremony in Normandy in their presence.
More than 150,000 Allied troops launched the air, sea and land landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944, an operation that ultimately led to the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany.
Great Britain also marked D-Day in Portsmouth, which was the main departure point for the five thousand ships that headed for Normandy 80 years ago.
