State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza presented by US President Joseph Biden "is almost identical to the one that Hamas said it would accept just a few weeks ago".

He added that the US and other mediators "have not yet received an official response to the proposal from the militant group."

"The world should know, the Palestinian people should know, that the only thing preventing an immediate truce is Hamas," Miller said, according to ABC News.

He added that there were some differences between the proposals that Hamas had previously said it would accept, but noted that the US, Qatar and Egypt felt that the obstacles could be easily removed.

Last Friday, US President Biden presented a proposal that should lead to the release of hostages from Gaza and a ceasefire.
