50 degrees, people die
More than 50 people have died in India in the past three days due to high heat, most of them on Saturday, when the last phase of parliamentary elections was held.
About 33 people died in the northern Indian federal state of Uttar Pradesh, and about 20 in the state of Odisha, the BBC reports.
India's election commission chief Navdeep Rinwa said families of election commission members who died in the heat will receive $18,000 in compensation.
Parliamentary elections in India are always held in April and May, but this year the temperatures were record high.
The Ministry of Health confirmed that 56 deaths from heatstroke were recorded from March 1 to May 30, and that 24,849 cases of heatstroke were reported during that period.
Temperatures in North, West and Central India for the past two weeks have been around 45 degrees Celsius, with some places reaching 50 degrees.
